These shoes are a happy recent thrift. I love short heels like this, they always make me feel a little more put together but I don't trip over myself in them like I do with higher heels. Also these are by Bass, which is always nice to find.


Also, when I have my coat and hat on today (the same ones from yesterday) I am dressed head to toe in shades of BROWN. I used to be against brown clothing for some bizarre reason but I've really warmed up to it lately. Brown. How about it.

cold weather coat

everything thriftedI bought this coat back in the spring, juuuust when it was warm enough to pack up all my winter gear for the season. I've secretly been wishing for cold weather so I could finally wear it and this when I heard the weather update on the radio and heard that temperatures all over PEI were hovering around freezing, I knew it was time to bust it out. I actually saw snow on some cars that had commuted into town from the country this morning!

I went on a little thrifing trip with some girlfriends on the weekend and found this doily-collar blouse in Montague. I also got an absolutely TERRIBLE salad cookbook from the mid-60s, which was when molded gelatin salads peaked in popularity. I remember seeing jello salads at potlucks growing up and as disgusting as I always thought they looked they have NOTHING on the salads in this book. I think I'll scan some and share them here because they really need to be seen to be believed.

thriftin'

First of all, THANK YOU for all the girl band suggestions on my last post! I've been checking them out all weekend and discovering some new favourites.

I had a pretty good thrifting day yesterday so I thought I'd put all my finds in a post.

First of all I went to something called the "World's Largest Garage Sale" which was a HORRIBLE name for this thing, because it wasn't in a garage and it wasn't especially big either? It was more like a flea market, so there were a lot of overpriced collectible sort of things. I only bought a couple things but it was fun to just walk around and gawk at all the stuff there, you know?



This is some sort of planter/keyrack hybrid.



Everyone from my hometown drinks Schnooner for some reason so I felt a little drawn to this flattened out old can.


When that was all said and done I decided to take a trip to the grocery store to gather some ingredients for Budget Bytes Root Beer Pulled Pork (It was delicious, btw). I "popped in" to a thrift store on the way and ended up finding a bunch of stuff that I had to carry around with me while I ran my errands. Including this 60s trenchcoat...


I look sweaty and pissed because I WAS. Just trying this on made me way too warm. I've been keeping an eye out for a trenchcoat but this is the first time I've found something that I think is my style. I love the big full "skirt" on this one!


There was a BOGO deal on, btw, so I got the coat, these two tops and the pair of shoes, for 6 dollars all together.


I always love a pair of t-straps. I was considering getting some Golden Ponies in this style.


I come across this tag a lot in my travels, usually on really brightly-coloured, fun tops from the 70s-80s. I looked up the town on the tag (Lanark) and learned that it's really suffered economically since the "Kitten Mill" closed down in the 90s, due to cheap exported fabric from Asia. Sad, eh? Everything I own by this brand is such great quality, with a lot of attention to details.

I've had this bag for a few years but this is the first time I've used it as something other than decoration. It opens like a clamshell, which makes it kinda unwieldy and annoying to use. Pretty though, eh?




This blouse came from a whirlwind visit to Repeats' costume room (and costume back room) a few days ago. THRIFTING TIP: if a thrift store has a costume section, that is where all the vintage hides. Even stuff that isn't particularly costumey, like this blouse! And if you're local, you really need to go to Repeats. The costume room is STUFFED, and the back room is packed with old stuff as well.



Locals may recognize this area as Dead Man's Pond in Victoria Park. As the name might suggest, there are some creepy stories about this spot, and rumours that the pond is bottomless (spoiler alert: it's not). All urban legends aside, it makes for a pretty sweet place to take outfit pictures. Nice lighting, lots of rocks to act as tripods, and no one ever walks by and sees me... probably because they've been freaked out by all the ghost stories...

yard sailing

I went to the Eastern Kings Giant Yard sale yesterday, which isn't so much one big yard sale as it is a bunch of little yard sales spread out through the countryside. I spent the day driving around with my mom and sister, we hit most of the sites. I bought everything.




I needed something to corral the pile of shoes that are always at my door. This looks to be an old speaker, but it's hollowed out now. It needs a little TLC but it does the trick for now.



I've never felt the urge to wear mens ties but I love the embroidery on this. I think I'll wear it with a white shirt and high-waisted skirt.



Two soft comfy 80s tops.



This atomic scale needs some cleaning up as well but it's in great shape otherwise. It's still accurate! It's hard to photograph but there are little gold sparkles all over it.



Magazines, ranging from 1948 to 1966. I can't get over that Valentine's Day cover. Chatelaine is a Canadian womens magazine that's still going on strong today. I've never heard of Look but the theme of this issue intrigued me: The American Woman, in 1966. I'm looking forward to the articles in that.



This little brown jug will probably serve as a cookie jar for me



A clock in need of a battery



Someone was selling off their cat collection. My favourite is the teak guy up front.



Normally these baskets are for holding fruit in the kitchen, but I'm short on bathroom storage.



I need more chairs like I need a hole in the head but I love the pattern on this one. So comfy too!


I don't think I've ever had such a great yard sale haul, and I didn't spend more than five dollars on any single item!

Ummm I think Value Village listened to all my tweets to them banging on about how everything is too damn expensive there. Yesterday I found a bunch of stuff (including these shoes and the bag) and everything was under 10 bucks! That's still a touch expensive for a thrift store, but I'll take it. Especially after seeing LITERAL ACTUAL GARBAGE on the shelves last week. Seriously! There were a bunch of wine bottles there for 2 bucks a pop. Not even fancy bottles, they were like... 10 empty bottles of Hochtaeler. I assume someone "donated" them because they were too lazy to go to the bottle depot.

I didn't get a great picture of these shoes but they're HEELS! again! they're really comfy too. I love the colour and the rounded toe and the big buckle on these. They're kinda giving me Chloe vibes. Which I appreciate, because I'll never afford a pair of actual Chloe shoes ever in my life.

I paid a visit to The Garment District when it opened on Tuesday and picked up a few things, including this button-down. This is the new thrift store operating out of the old Froggie's building. So far I think I like it! It's very organized and CHEAP! I think almost everything is about five bucks, a welcome change these days, when you can't find a single thing at Value Village for under eight dollars. I'm not sure if anything can fill the hole in my heart where the Froggie's costume section used to be (lol dramatic much) but the Garment District does ease the pain a little bit.

and the most boring but most important thrift of the season - new boots! these are made in canada, lined in shearling, and the leather is waterproof and salt-resistant! just what i needed.

My favourite thrift store closed a few weeks ago (RIP Froggies) but it has been bought and there was a $1 liquidation sale on the weekend. I didn't get a huge haul but I did get this bow-neck blouse. the actual shape and sleeves of it are totally awful and shapeless but the collar is perfect for peeking out from behind jumpers and sweaters. The bow is removable too, so I can have a simple peter pan collar peek out from those jumpers and sweaters if I do desire (and I do, of course).

I was in Nova Scotia this weekend for my grandfather's 91st birthday party. On the way there we had a spare hour to go to both Louie's locations in Truro. While we were there my mom showed me this skirt, along with a couple others, to tell me how nice the wool was and how great they would be for her to cut up and use in rugs. So of course I stole them, tried them on, and bought them for myself. I'm sure they would have made beautiful rugs but I've been looking for full wool skirts like this for years! i couldn't help it! I got what was coming to me when we got to the next location and my sister snatched up a pair of Etienne Aigner chain loafers right from under my nose. I still made out with some great finds though, including this hat and vintage polo.
